Excitement in the Sicilian agricultural sector

"Although exports represent only 20% of the total, our produce has been available in British supermarkets for the past 18 years. In 2014, we even won an important award for innovation. It's one of the most demanding markets, but one that can give us great satisfaction even in unusual seasons such as 2017/18," explains COA srl Sole Administrator Roco Lardaruccio.

The season was characterised by smaller grades, however volumes increased by 14% and sales were lively for both blood and blonde oranges and lemons.

Demand interested in Sicilian citrus fruit
"The volumes sold increased during this season. Blood oranges did particularly well - they hold the PGI mark and mainly come from the Catania plain at the foothills of Mount Etna. Sicilian lemons have also been much appreciated by both domestic and foreign consumers."

Rocco Lardaruccio also added that the habits of Italian consumers are changing, as people are more careful about a correct diet and tend to prefer domestic produce. Sicilian producers and traders have proved they can meet consumer and buyer demands as they 'rediscover' domestic productions, capable of combining tradition and innovation.

"Analysing the volumes sold and the requests received by the various food groups, it is possible to appreciate a significant relaunch and recognition of the quality of Sicilian products."

Varietal renewal
Over the past few years, COA witnessed a considerable varietal renewal. New interesting clones that meet schedules and have a more refined flavour have appeared alongside the traditional Tarocco, Moro and Sanguinello varieties.

"The entire citrus sector is going through a period of great renewal. Producers are trying to get over the devastating CTV crisis with considerable financial effort. In order to do it successfully, the help of Institutions is essential."

A beneficial fruit
Citrus fruits are among the most popular fruits thanks to their unique flavour and natural properties. Consumers choose oranges, lemons, grapefruits and tangerines for their vitamin content.

Oranges contain many substances that guarantee the well-being of our organism and help prevent various degenerative diseases. Flavonoids such as anthocyanins are powerful antioxidants that neutralise free radicals and perform important physiological functions.
