On Wednesday, police officers arrested two people who were aboard a truck containing contraband tomatoes. The arrest came after a violent chase in the city of Lambare, Central Department.
According to the police report, the truck was coming out of the Ita Enramada de Asuncion neighborhood, near the river, when police officers patrolling the area realized it was carrying suspicious goods.
The Police requested back up from officials of the Customs Directorate and several police stations in the area to intercept the truck and verify its content.
After the police mobilization, the occupants of the truck accelerated the march and, after a violent persecution, the police managed to catch them at the Felix Bogado Avenue, in a first operation.
However, the alleged smugglers managed to escape the police with the help of some Longshoremen, reported the Commissioner who led the chase.
The men stole guns and recovered the truck with the cargo and continued their journey.
No shots were fired, but there were material damages, as the truck rammed several vehicles when trying to flee.
In a second operation, with greater support from the police forces, the authorities resumed the persecution and definitively caught the occupants of the vehicle in the city of Lambare.
One of the detainees said that he was only transporting the merchandise to the Abasto market for marketing.
The detainees are at the disposal of the Public Ministry, while the merchandise will be referred to the National Service of Quality and Plant and Seed Health (Senave) for analysis.
