Italy: Good start for Macfrut

A good number of visitors attended Macfrut on the first day. We talked to a few exhibitors with different opinions ranging from “It went very well, lots of people visited our stand” to “I expected something more.” Another added that “the important thing is people who are seriously interested in doing business. I don’t want a crowd in front of my stand, but I want to showcase my products to someone who is interested in signing a contract.”

Peak expected on second day...
The peak is expected for the second day, 10th May 2018, as a lot of foreigners and coaches from all over Italy should be arriving. Wandering around the stands, you immediately realize the high-quality of the exhibitors, not so much due to their set-ups, but thanks the products presented. Just think that 33 companies were rewarded with the Macfrut Innovation Award. At the fair, you can find everything needed to produce, store and transport fruit and vegetables.

Renzo Piraccini, Macfrut President

The Acqua Campus area is very interested and well-designed. Luciano Trentini came up with the idea, which was then developed by Cesena Fiera and its technical partners. It makes you realize how you can save water by irrigating in a targeted way using the most modern technologies.

In addition to President Renzo Piraccini, Agricultural Commission vice-president Paolo De Castro, Colombia Minister for Agriculture Juan Guillermo Zuluaga Cardona, president of Regione Emilia Stefano Bonaccini, councillor for agriculture for Veneto Giuseppe Pan and for Basilicata Luca Braia, Cesena and Rimini mayors Paolo Lucchi e Andrea Gnassi also attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Veneto (and radicchio) are the protagonists
Councillor for Agriculture for Regione Veneto Giuseppe Pan stressed the points of strength of his territory: “We are the leading region in many industrial, manufacturing and technological sectors. Around 70 thousand agricultural businesses are located in our region, producing a gross saleable product of €6 billion.

Around 5 thousand food and agricultural industries generate an additional €6 billion of GSP. There are 11700 fresh produce businesses covering 40 thousand hectares. At least one third of our Gross saleable production relates to the primary sector. In the winter, radicchio is our leading product with 7600 hectares.”

But the challenge for Veneto is the same as in the rest of the country. “We need POs to collaborate and create unique platforms capable of competing on the international markets. To achieve this, we need to work with all our partners.”

Progetto Nocciola Italia
At Macfrut, the Ferrero Hazelnut Company presented "Progetto Nocciola Italia". The objective is to develop at least 20 thousand hectares of new groves, increasing the cultivated area by 30%, by 2025.

Progetto nocciola convention

Ferrero undertakes to create a territorial development system shared with all other actors to support Italian agricultural entrepreneurs. In particular, producers are offered a path to improve their nursery plants, essential to provide warranties on a phytosanitary level, as well as to identify the best areas to be destined to groves.
