Italy: Pineapples by air not affected by competition from summer fruit

"Over the past few months, demand of pineapples by air peaked in the months of June, July and August, meaning riper fruits do not suffer from the competition of other summer fruit," explains Claudio Gorini, sales manager for AL.MA., a leading company in the import and distribution of fresh, exotic and counter-seasonal fruit.

The segment appears to be increasingly popular, so much so that the main exotic fruit brands have shown their interest for this market. Despite the competition, supply is still lower than demand, so things are looking positive.

"The only threat is MD2 pineapples by sea, as their colour is more appealing." The produce arrives mainly from Costa Rica and a few batches from the Ivory Coast. Nonetheless, colour should never be mistaken for the degree of ripeness, as the two parameters cannot be overlapped.

AL.MA. gets is supplies from Santo Domingo and quality is constant throughout the year.
