Excess quantities lead to extraordinarily low pricing

Germany: 'Extremely low prices in the asparagus market'

Local asparagus is currently available for very low prices. The early varieties are still being harvested because of the delayed start of the season, therefore joining later varieties that are already on the market. The weather conditions in the next few days are expected to be mild and sunny.

Ruinous
In the Greater Frankfurt area, asparagus is currently prices very low, says Ralf Wisser of the wholesaler of the same name. “Here, on the local wholesale market, fresh first-class goods are sold between 5 and 6 euros. But once the asparagus is one day old, the price halves. This also applies to the wholesale market in Munich. There is an awful lot of asparagus on the market; the cold stores are full and of course this is ruinous for the growers.”

With green asparagus, the market situation is hardly better. Wisser: "Certain quantities can be sold at a good price, but anything going over that is sold at very low prices. We are talking about 2 euros per kg.” According to retailers, the asparagus market is not comparable at all to that other popular spring product, the strawberry. "I can attract a lot more people with a low strawberry price. Every second customer here, on the market, is ready to buy strawberries. Unfortunately, it is not the same with asparagus.”

Rostock Wholesale Market
It is not just the state of Hesse, where the white stems are sold bargain prices, It is the same on the other side of the Federal Republic, on the Rostock wholesale market. “Our class I-Wares are currently between €2.00 and 4.50. The cheapest category is the 26+ caliber: this product now hovers between €2.00 and 2.50 /kg. I currently don’t have the exact numbers, but that is well below last year's price level,” said a buyer of wholesaler Güdük GmbH & Co. KG.
