"AU: Good tomato sales lead to big donation for "Maddie's Month"

The sale of Flavorite produce has raised $100,000 for Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision, following the second "Maddie's Month" campaign.

Throughout November last year, proceeds from Flavorite’s Cherry Burst Tomatoes and Vine Ripened Cherry Tomatoes, sold exclusively at Coles, were donated to Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision. This donation will fund vital research into Aplastic Anaemia treatment.

Maddie, who is the sister Nick Riewoldt and cousin of Jack, both AFL stars, passed away as a result of the bone marrow failure system in 2015. The cheque was formally presented this week and Jack says the contribution is a welcome one for the charity.

"Maddie’s Vision has a single focus – to fund the urgent needs in medical research that will discover improved treatments and a cure for BMFS," he said. "Maddie ran out of treatment options and lost her fight. Maddie’s Month, and the support from Flavorite and Coles, provides us with a commitment to help fund important research and ensure others don’t face what Maddie went through."

Mark Millis, co-founder of Flavorite has battled blood cancer and personally understands the importance of medical research into Bone Marrow Failure. His son and the company's Farm Manager, Chris recognises how important any funding support is to fighting the condition.

"Flavorite is really excited about supporting Maddie’s Vision to make a difference in our understanding of Aplastic Anaemia and Bone Marrow Failure," he said.

The donation comes as the Victorian Government announced a $2.4 million grant to fund a research centre for Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes and a co-funded International Research Fellowship opportunity at the Victorian Cancer agency.

The third annual Maddie’s Month will return again this coming November to help find a more certain future for Australians living with Bone Marrow Failure Syndrome.
