Turkey: Tomato season with fluctuating pricing and supply

"The tomato season from this region started about a month ago and pricing and availability change on a daily basis. These fluctuations make it hard to predict the market situation. At the beginning of the season prices were high, but luckily a week ago, they slightly decreased", said Enes Tuncdemir from Ege Imex (Import and Export) a Food Trade Limited company from Mugla, Turkey.

He explains that the company has a cold storage in Mugla in Turkey, which they use mainly to store pomegranates, lemons and oranges. "However, there was still some unused space. Since the tomato season starts in March, we as well started to export tomatoes. Farmers from different regions collect their tomatoes, and if quality is good enough it can be exported. We reach out to our customers and finalize the export process."

The season of the Mugla region is expected to last for three months. "As we work with producers from different regions, we can supply tomatoes year-round. We export mainly to Qatar, Romania, Poland, North Iraq, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Afganistan and Hungary. Sometimes, as well to other countries, but it's all order-based", continues Enes, who is always looking for other export opportunities.
