Pierre Batardière, SARL Daniel Cadiou:
France: “Shallots will soon gain in value”
“In 2017, there was a large harvest of traditional shallots. This has lowered the prices,” says Pierre Batardière from the French company Daniel Cadiou. The company is specialised in the production of traditional shallots and is situated in Plouzévédé, Brittany, where the production was especially high.
Pierre: “The shallot market is currently in a transition phase as we are gradually switching to coldstore shallots, which means that the product will soon start to gain in value and prices will rise. However, there still is a high degree of uncertainty on the market because we do not know exactly how much stock there is left.”

Concerning next season, Pierre says that the planting period has not been easy. “The weather conditions were bad, and we are two weeks behind normal development for this time of the year. We finished planting just before the warm weather conditions of last week. This has turned out quite positive and the crops might catch up on the delay. Time will tell.”
Daniel Cadiou offers traditional shallots, garlic, onions and different vegetables. Recently the company presented a new organic range that includes red cabbage, white cabbage and cauliflower.
