Italy: High demand for rocket

Demand for rocket is high at the moment. The winter campaign is almost over in the Sele plain, but the peak that should have been recorded in December-January is happening now.

"Consumption has been increasing for the past two-three years. What's peculiar about this season is that outgoing quantities are increasing now, while they normally peak in winter," explain Giuseppe and Fabio Altamura, from the PO established on 1st January 2018 after the merger of two companies that had been growing baby leaves for years.

OP Altamura can count on 300 hectares of greenhouses, almost 20% of which are for organic cultivation.

"When the season ends in the Sele plain, other regions start. However, the increased demand probably won't have led to larger areas being planted in the north."

The land the PO destines to the production of rocket has kept on increasing over the past few years.

Current demand comes from all over northern Europe. "Winter production is practically over and now the spring-summer produce is becoming available, so the drop in volumes available is normal. The lively demand caught us off-guard, though."

Another factor that must be considered is the change in consumer habits. "For example, people usually start their diets in this period and start eating more salad."

Prices are more than satisfactory.
