The Valleri company from Cavallino Treporti (VE) is now being run by the third generation of owners. It specialises in the production, processing and packaging of aromatic herbs, fresh-cut salads and fresh and dried vegetables.
The aromatic herb season started rather badly this year, not so much due to production problems, but rather because the non-spring like weather slowed down consumption and demand.
"It's a pity, as quality was excellent and the produce had no defects. The slow demand meant we handled around 20-30% less than the seasonal average. We're hoping things will get better as the season continues, but one month may not be enough to make up for everything."
As regards market trends, the manager feels the consumption of salad is decreasing, meaning a new way to promote these vegetables is needed. The Valleri company is increasing the number of species multiplied with cuttings in order to obtain a superior quality.
Stefano Valleri reports it's a tough moment for local growers. "Over the past 20 years, agricultural businesses have dropped from 600 to 110, and this trend seems irreversible. What worries us mostly is not only the demise of agriculture, but also the lack of safeguarding of the landscape and environment only cultivators can provide. Our territory is at serious hydraulic risk, so their work is essential."
What is more, the lack of generational turnover is also worrying: the average age of local entrepreneurs is 64. "We must remember, though, that it's not easy for the younger generation to set up an agricultural business, especially considering the bureaucracy and very low returns."
