Argentina: Great expectations for prunes

The international market for dried fruit, specifically for plums, shows good signs of improvement and business opportunities, according to comments made by the delegation of the provincial Ministry of Economy in San Rafael.

Vicente Emilio Russo, the head of the provincial Ministry of Economy in San Rafael, said "what Pro Mendoza, which works together with exporters, is not saying is that there is an interesting dynamic in the international dry fruit market, for plums and for other dried fruits."

Russo added that "Russia is an interesting market; we are trying to make a platform in the Arab countries so that we can reach all the Middle East. There are good expectations."

According to the official, "if exporters do well, there will be a trickle down process over the primary sector."

Regarding plum prices, he said, "there isn't a fixed price but I think a good sized plum will cost about 3.50 pesos."

He also said they were making efforts to boost the association of producers. "We are trying to frame the association of producers in a cooperative. The Ministry has already discussed the possibility of installing a calibration line and at some point a device to pit the plums."
