US: Rouses continues Southern expansion with experience-focused store

Rouses Markets will open an experience-focused store in western Mobile, Alabama this week, according to The Shelby Report. This will be the chain’s fifth store in the Mobile area since it entered the market in 2013. The new store will include a barbecue station with house-smoked meats, a Mongolian Grill, meal kits and a culinary center that will host classes, wine tastings and other events. The store also features a K-cup station that lets shoppers select from various flavors and build their own 24 pack. Rouses, based in Thibodeaux, Louisiana, plans to keep growing in Alabama, CEO Donny Rouse has told various news outlets. In addition to its Mobile stores, the company operates a store in Gulf Shores and will open a location in Orange Beach later this year that it took over from Winn-Dixie.

US: Albertsons drops 'Market Street Idaho' name from new Boise store
Albertsons Cos. is nearing completion of its new foodie-focused concept store in Boise, Idaho, with all the bells and whistles as originally promised, except for one—its name. The retailer is bagging the recently announced Market Street Idaho banner at its new store on Broadway Avenue, slated to open late June in replacement of a nearly 60-year-old Albertsons store that was located across the street. Instead, the new store will be branded under the traditional Albertsons banner in honor of the retailer’s longtime history in the Boise State University community.

US: Wegmans to open ‘unique’ multilevel store in mall
Wegmans Food Markets is slated to open a multilevel supermarket on Sunday, April 29 within Massachusetts’ Natick Mall that, according to the store’s manager, Rich Boscia, is “a unique space that looks unlike anything we’ve done before. Every decision was made with our customers in mind.” One of the company’s largest stores to date, the 146,000-square-foot location has two stories, each with direct access to the mall. The store’s central atrium features a cart conveyor system with an adjacent escalator for customers to move between floors, while the spacious layout offers almost 70,000 items, more than 3,000 of which are organic.

US: Supervalu to sell Shop ‘n Save & 8 warehouses

Supervalu is seeking to sell its Shop ‘n Save retail divisions, and has entered into a sale-leaseback for eight of its warehouses. The moves in part reflect the influence of an activist investor that has been pressuring the Minneapolis-based wholesaler to show improved returns, although the company said they also align with its stated strategy to recast itself as a wholesaler. Supervalu said the deal for its owned warehouses would net proceeds of $483mln.

Russia: Magnit continues Q1 expansion despite LFL decline

Russian retailer Magnit has recorded a sales increase of 8.08% to RUB288.56bln in its unaudited results for the first quarter of 2018, although like-for-like numbers show declines. During the period, the retailer expanded its network by adding 275 stores, reaching a total of 16,625 stores, while its selling space increased 13.24% to 5.83mln square metres. It now operates 12,283 convenience stores, 242 hypermarkets, 210 'Magnit Family' outlets and 3,890 drogerie stores.

Carrefour Poland: 2017 sales rise 5.5%
Carrefour Poland saw sales rise 5.5% in 2017 to PLN9.68bln (US$2.8bln). The retailer said the positive performance was driven by a mixture of new stores and shoppers reacting positively to the modernisation of others. Carrefour Poland invested PLN244.6mln (US$71.1mln) to open over 100 new stores and update others. The retailer added three hypermarkets, eight supermarkets and more than 100 proximity stores.

Billa to open 10 new stores in Bulgaria
Austrian supermarket chain Billa, which already employs 4500 people in Bulgaria, plans to open between eight and ten new stores in three cities – Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna. This move is expected to raise revenue by 9-10% and create between 320 and 450 new jobs, with every new store employing approximately 40-50 people. Boyko Sachanski, director of Billa’s operations in Bulgaria, said that the opening of new branches across the country, as well as the complementary increase in the number of customers (over 1.3mln a week) and customer spending (13 leva on average), are to thank for the company’s revenue growth so far.

Eroski Spain: price reductions
The prices of more than 1,000 private-label products have been reduced across Eroski’s network. In the first two months of 2018, Eroski said its reduced prices and promotions have saved shoppers €46mln. The lower prices centre on basket essentials, mainly in the food and fresh categories, whilst encompassing free-from products. Reducing the overall basket price, whilst improving customers’ wellbeing are key points in the accompanying marketing campaign. According to marketing director Eva Ugarte, supply chain improvements have facilitated the price reductions.

Italy’s MD discount chain to open 180 new stores by 2021
Italian discounter MD plans to open 180 new stores by 2021 and create 2,200 new jobs, according to its CEO. Speaking at the retailer’s national convention in Sorrento, CEO Patrizio Podini announced that MD will open, on average, 45 new stores with a size of 1,500 to 2,000 square metres per year between 2018 and 2021. In addition, hundreds of branches will be restructured, for an overall investment of over €1bln.

Carrefour deal with Système U makes it France's largest buyer
French retailer Carrefour has struck a five-year purchasing alliance with peer Système U, stealing a march over rivals in a deal that will make Carrefour the biggest buyer in its competitive home market. The companies said they were in talks to jointly negotiate purchases with their main, multi-national food and non-food suppliers, in a partnership that is also intended to favour French agricultural producers.
