First nectarines and peaches available in Germany from mid-May

Greek organic stone fruit season about to start

The European harvest season of stone fruit is beginning successively. After the start of the Spanish supply, the first batches from other Mediterranean areas will soon arrive on the German market. In Greece, the producers are currently in the preparatory phase of the new crop year and are expected to shift the first organic nectarines and peaches starting in week 21, according to Sophoclis Michaelides of specialized trading company Bio Ilios GmbH in Tübingen.

Losses
Normally, the sale of Greek stone-fruit products continues into September with increased sales at the beginning and end of the season. In general, however, the average demand for organic stone fruits remains high in the German specialist trade, says Michaelides. “The only problem is to get large volumes of the appropriate quality. Due to these quality problems in the previous year we decided to reduce our stone fruit quantities and thus reduce the losses.”

According to Michaelides, these significant quality problems have to do with the constant changing of varieties in the stone fruit sector. “During the 80's, the producers switched to other varieties because of their longer shelf life and higher yield per hectare. Because of this, aromatic varieties such as the Royal Glory and Red Glory have disappeared from cultivation in Greece and throughout Europe. Due to the large crop failures of today's varieties and their general sensitivity, people are trying the old products again in new growing countries such as Azerbaijan.

Import & Export
Bio Ilios GmbH imports and exports organic products to and from Germany, Greece and Cyprus. Since its foundation in 2001, supplying the German organic food trade has been the mainstay of this company. In order to meet the constant demand for Greek products, the GmbH cooperates with a total of seven producer cooperatives throughout Greece. In addition to stone fruit, the company markets tomatoes, asparagus, peppers, citrus and olives.
