US melon grower introduces new variety and expands into organics

Savor Fresh Farms announces the expansion of their popular Kiss melon program for the 2018 season. Expansion includes the introduction of the newest Kiss melon, “Snow Kiss”, organic Kiss melon production and increased acres of the consumer favorite Sugar Kiss melon.

As a producer of flavorful melons, Savor Fresh Farms is always searching for the next exciting variety for their Kiss melon suite. Trialing hundreds of seed varieties yearly from all over the world, testing in different soil and growing conditions to find varieties that will be consistently great tasting. In 2018 that exhaustive trialing has led to the newest Kiss melon, Snow Kiss.

Last year's Kiss melon harvest

Snow Kiss has its own unique texture and flavor profile as well as stunning appearance. With a white exterior and white flesh, this melon wows consumers with both great flavor and appearance. Milas Russell III, President of Savor Fresh Farms, remarked, “We found Snow Kiss’ flavor to be sweet, but not overpowering. Texture at first bite is semi-crisp with a subtle crunch, but the melon soon dissolves on the palate, providing a delectable eating experience. We know Snow Kiss will be another success with consumers.”

Another expansion project for Savor Fresh is its first foray in to organic production. Mr. Russell continues, “We’ve had many consumer requests for organic Kiss melons, but we wanted to make sure that all the right components were in place before we added organics to our line. There is no substitute for flavor and that doesn’t change with organics. When consumers are paying an elevated price for organic produce, they should get the best flavor.”

Consumer feedback drives Savor Fresh Farms growing program. Connecting with consumers on a number of levels, their feedback is used to make adjustments in Savor Fresh’s growing and harvesting programs. The tremendously positive feedback from retail and increased consumer demand of the Sugar Kiss melon resulted in the decision for 2018 to increase acreage of Sugar Kiss to meet that demand.

Patrinka Crammond, Retail Program Director, summarized “Consumer demand for unique flavor experiences is driving growth in many produce categories and with the Kiss Melon line we are striving to add depth to our customer’s melon categories.”

2018 looks to be a big year for Savor Fresh Farms who will start production from the first week of May and harvest through late October domestically, then transition to production in Australia for the winter months.
