GAF Srl has the objective of not only promoting local strawberries through a brand, but to relaunch them as a niche production.
After gathering around twenty producers, the company chose a variety to test in the area. "Results exceeded what we used to achieve in the area."
The project will lead to the definition of the 'Fragola GAF di Marsala' variety. The idea is to create a brand around a product that has organoleptic properties unattainable elsewhere."
The second step regards the GlobalGAP certification, necessary to start a fruitful collaboration with retailers. The final target won't be standard retailers, but rather gourmet supermarkets in the richest European countries.
The company focuses on a return to flavour, "a pleasant novelty for those like the younger generations, who have only eaten certain grades which can lack aroma."
The project will involve a maximum of 20 hectares. The market demands the highest quality, which means managing to provide answers to a clientele demanding very high production, organisational and logistic standards but also willing to pay good money for them.
GAF gathers a considerable number of associates growing 1000 hectares in total in the Trapani province.
The company also deals with the import-export of fresh produce on a European scale and commercialises 25,000 tons of watermelons (Caravan) and yellow melons (Elios).
These two products are already available while Victoria grapes will become available in 15 days' time.
