First harvest of Turkish cherries will be exported to Far East Asia
Cherries grown under the guidance of Cukurova University, ın the fertile, low altitude lands of Adana, will be exported to the Far East Asia market.
Prof. Dr. Ali Kuden from Cukuroba University Faculty of Agriculture said, “Cherry is usually grown in high altitude cold areas and we have been working hard to grow cherries in this warm, low altitude area. We have tried it in three different areas and in one of the areas, we were very successful in terms of production quality.
We are focusing on low altitude plains as the fields become smaller as you go to higher altitudes and irrigation systems are much more difficult to set up there.
İn the global trade, big cherry exporting countries usually export the early harvest products to Far East Asian markets. There is an especially big demand for early harvest cherries in China. We need to be able to penetrate into these markets if, as a country, we want to be a player in this product’s global trade.
We had made an agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture of China in 2016. However in 2017 we were not able to meet our end of the deal as they demanded the products in May and we were not able to fulfil that demand. After our intensive efforts, we managed to achieve an early May harvest time in one production area. We are trying 25-30 varieties to see which one brings the best results in terms of cost and quality performance.”
