REWE and nahkauf are intensifying their commitment to more sustainable production

Supporting projects in agricultural regions by purchasing bananas

Bananas, available in Germany, generally come from growing areas in Central and South America where social and ecological standards are low. Against this backdrop, REWE is supporting a specially established Banana Fund, which finances social and ecological projects in Costa Rica and Panama and helps to improve local living, working and environmental conditions.

From 23 April to 5 May, REWE and nahkauf customers can support this commitment by purchasing bananas. For every kilo of bananas sold, regardless of which brand, 10 cents will go to the banana fund. REWE will then round up the grand total as it does every year. In addition to this, REWE will draw the consumer's attention to these topics with its publicity campaign.

And this banana fund, established in 2014, will not stand on its own. Since 2007 the REWE Group has committed itself to more sustainable production of bananas, financing local projects in the banana producing countries. The retail company has already provided more than 2.8 million euros to the fund in order to support ecological and social projects. The focus is on education and youth work, medical care, infrastructure and biodiversity. The selection criteria for the projects were developed by representatives of local non-governmental organizations (civil society, environmental protection associations, employee representatives, etc.) with the German Association for International Cooperation (GIZ) GmbH and the REWE Group.

Local organizations can apply for funding for their projects through tenders. Once approved and implemented, these projects are then supervised intensively and controlled locally by the German Association for International Cooperation (GIZ-IS) GmbH.
