Italy: Cherries grown in greenhouses soon to be harvested

Bolla Ferdinando, a company located in the Verona province that has been producing and commercialising cherries for over forty years, is investing in greenhouses to bring forward cherry harvesting.

Sweet Aryana harvested on 25th April 2017

The company manages to commercialise cherries from early May until late July.

"We supply retailers and discount chains directly. We have equipped ourselves with hydrocoolers, graders and packagers to sort the produce according to client needs. Over the past three years, we have invested in greenhouse cultivation to be able to start commercialisation earlier. The main advantages have been: earlier production, higher sales prices, no damage caused by cracking or bad weather, no insect damage, no bird damage and fewer treatments," explains manager Roberto Bolla.

Bolla cultivates around 6 hectares of cherry orchards through its family business Orti Veneti. It commercialises 1500 tons of cherries on average.

"The varieties grown in greenhouses are Early Lory, Sweet Early, Early Bigi, Sweet Aryana, Sweet Lorenz. Thanks to forced cultivation, we manage to obtain produce that is healthy and perfect, generally harvested in late April. This year, the season is slightly delayed and we think harvesting will start around May 2nd in greenhouses and May 12th in open fields."

"We currently count on over 400 associates and, over the next few years, we are looking to invest in a covered orchard to guarantee high-quality fruit and bring commercialisation forward."
