US radishes set to increase in domestic volume

Imported radishes are beginning to wrap up so supplies are less for now.

“We’re coming to the end of our radish production in Mexico so supplies are a bit lighter than in the past couple of months,” says Lori Bigras with Green Giant™ Fresh.

While supplies seem to match the volume brought in last year, in May radishes start in Salinas, Ca. and Oregon. “Then local areas will start in June and there should be nationwide supply, noting there will also be a lot of production in Florida and Michigan,” says Bigras, who notes that Green Giant Fresh sells topped and tailed radishes in 8 and 16 oz. resealable packs and by the bunch.

Higher prices
Demand for radishes come from both retail and foodservice sectors (consumption of radishes only tends to spike around the end-of-year holidays) though with the lighter supply, prices were affected. “Three weeks ago, the market was triple what is now,” says Bigras, noting that the lower supply was weather-related. “The biggest issue we see with radishes is when the wind burns the leafy tops of the plants,” she says.

Looking ahead, Bigras says that in the next few weeks, supply should increase with more and more local suppliers on the horizon and the market should stay steady.
