"Attack is the best defense, so we keep at it in our daily business, in every respect, never resting on our laurels," says Markus Mosa. In line with this, the three-tier group of companies in 2017 invested heavily again in its home market of Germany. Side by side with the independent EDEKA merchants, the seven EDEKA regions and the EDEKA headquarters in Hamburg further developed their market concepts, logistics structures and production facilities for a total of EUR 1.7 billion. "In the current year 2018, we will invest more than two billion euros in Germany for the first time," explains Finance and Human Resources Director Martin Scholvin. Excluding the Kaiser's Tengelmann takeover, 245 new retail locations in the EDEKA network opened within a year, with 148 expansions of existing stores. The total sales area increased by 3.2 percent to 11.2 million square meters.
