"Industry needs stronger mentality"

"Taiwan pineapple sales went up after Spring Festival"

"There is currently a relatively large surface area of pineapple plantations in Taiwan. And the plantations are distributed over a wide area. The most popular variety among plantation owners is Jinzuan pineapple (Tai Nong 17). The Jinzuan pineapple variety is fragrant, sweet, and smooth fibrous fruit flesh. Almost 85% of Taiwan pineapple plantations grow Jinzuan pineapples. The production season of Jinzuan pineapples starts every year at the end of the winter and the beginning of the spring. The product quality is intimately connected to weather and temperature. The sugar content of Jinzuan pineapples can reach 18-19 if the night time temperature is between 23 and 24 degrees Celsius. This is the optimum flavor of Jinzuan pineapples." This is according to Mr. Lin Fuji, board chair of Taiwan Nong Yi Yuan Co., Ltd.

"Overall, the majority of Taiwanese pineapples are being sold on markets in mainland China. The Jinzuan pineapple is no exception to this rule. The purchase power of mainland consumers has increased in recent years. Taiwanese traders closely follow this development and hope to seize a large share of the growing market in mainland China. Traders care little for the development of the Taiwanese pineapple industry and are happy to sacrifice the Taiwanese pineapple industry to reach their goals. They harvest pineapples early, when they are only 30-40% ripe, and sell them on the market in mainland China. In the end, this only contributes to depressed and chaotic market conditions. This behavior also negatively impacts the image that mainland consumers have of Taiwanese pineapples."

"The reason for this development is the polarization on the Taiwanese Jinzuan pineapple market in the wake of Spring Festival. Some traders sold unripe Jinzuan pineapples with a sugar content of 15 in order to take advantage of business opportunities on the pineapple market in mainland China. Consumers were not impressed with the quality of this early harvest of Jinzuan pineapples and their enthusiasm for Jinzuan pineapples cooled. The market became depressed and traders were forced to temporarily halt supply."

"The temperature increased after Spring Festival and the base of the fruit has already turned yellow, which indicates the right balance of sweet and sour. We harvested under these conditions and started to ship the pineapples to mainland China in the week after Spring Festival. The consumer demand started to warm up again and the price consequently increased until current levels. The pineapples currently sell for 23-24 New Taiwan Dollar (NTD) [0.78-0.82 USD] per 0.6 kg. That is double the price of pineapples prior to Spring Festival. The current production season of Taiwanese Jinzuan pineapples is still in progress. It is difficult to say how the price will develop in the remainder of this season. However, judging from current conditions the market prospects look great."

"Taiwanese Jinzuan pineapple plantations are relatively widespread. Among them, the product quality is the best in the Pingdong production area. This is the result of excellent weather and soil conditions in Pingdong. The right time to enter the market is between February and June. In this period, the pineapples are 70% ripe. After the pineapples are harvested there is a delivery period of 7-8 days in which the pineapples continue to ripen. Nong Yi Yuan Company has carried out market supply to mainland China under these strict conditions for many years."

"Taiwan Nong Yi Yuan Co., Ltd. primarily grows the Tai Nong 17 Jinzuan pineapple variety. The company brand is "Shitou di" [Rocky Place]. This brand has obtained a registered trade mark on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. The company sells yellow and white boxes of pineapples. All the pineapples are harvested and then packaged in our own packaging factory. Our company has an annual supply volume of 1.2 million pineapples. Unlike in previous years, this year our company employed a unified marketing and retail model to ensure control over the entire operation."
