At the beginning of the week, the first batches of South Baden produce were offered on the market, with a kilo price of 15 to 16 euros per kilo. "Currently the price fluctuates on average at 9 to 10 Euro/kg. Although we already have asparagus in the usual calibres, demand is currently not covered. As retailing is on the rise right now and producers are starting to move on, the product will be sold in large quantities by the middle of next week.”
Marketing at home
French and Dutch goods as well as asparagus from other regions of Germany have already been available in the local retail stores for several weeks. However, the Südbader gourmet prefers regional products, says Mr Boll. “The so-called Marktgräfler is very popular here in the region, but is rather unknown in Frankfurt. We do not have a regional brand such as the Beelitzer Asparagus, which is known nationwide.”
But at the same time, with the steady rise of whitestems, the acreage in South Baden has quadrupled to a total of 1,200 hectares in the last 15 years. Violet and green asparagus are still in the background. Boll: "I have the impression that white asparagus in particular have become trendy over the years, among other things because these are now also showing up on the shelves of discounters such as Aldi and Lidl. In addition, the goods are also being marketed more and more directly, at little sales booths on the street.”
Regional products
Headquartered in Vogtsburg, the fruit and vegetable sales company Südbaden GmbH (OGS) has been marketing the products of the Südbaden eG market (EGRO) for more than 20 years. 90 percent of the volume of goods comes from about 140 highly professionalized producers within the South Baden region, who daily supply the marketing cooperatives with their fresh products. Apart from asparagus, top fruit and stone fruit, the sales cooperative also distributes strawberries: these will arrive on the market from the beginning to the middle of May.
