Spain left on its own in EU plant protection discussions

The Brexit will isolate Spain when it comes to defending its farmers' interests on phytosanitary protection within the EU, since the UK has been an assiduous ally in this field, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

During the annual meeting of the plant protection sectorial organization Aepla, the Director General of the Ministry Valentín Almansa said that Spain "is very lonely" when defending its positions in Brussels. Almansa has referred both to the specific demands for the use of phytosanitary products and to border protection measures, for example, against citrus pests.

In relation to the Brexit, the Director General has indicated that its impact will be negative in plant protection matters because the British "have been our usual ally" in the experts' committees, while sharing similar positions to the Spanish.
