Paraguay suspends tomato imports
Producers and importers of fruit and vegetable products met Monday afternoon in the premises of the National Plant Health, Seed and Quality Service (Senave), where producers requested no more Afidis (Phytosanitary Import Authorization) for tomatoes, as there is a good production of tomatoes in the area of 3 de Febrero, in the Department of Caaguazu.
"We are not giving any more Afidis. The last shipments of imported tomatoes will enter the country on Tuesday and Wednesday and then we won't issue anymore Afidis," said the Director of Vegetable Defense of the Senave, Nelson Fariña.
However, he said, they will await for the report of the Commercialization Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to see if the national production will cover the requirements of the local market, i.e. six million kilos per month. "We are waiting for that report," said Fariña.
