"We have been one of the first to sell organic pineapples under our own brand"

"Spain: "Small organic pineapples achieve better sales"

Pineapples are usually sold under the brands of the producers. In the case of organic pineapples, there are hardly any brands owned by marketers in Spain and in the rest of Europe.

"At the end of last week, we received the first organic MD2 pineapples from Costa Rica labelled under our own brand, which have just been launched into the market. We are one of the first companies to sell imported organic pineapples under our own brand, which is already packed in Costa Rica," says Sonia López, manager of Sonbio Export Import.

Until now, this Spanish company had been selling pineapples to its customers in the large retail sector under the supplier's brand. "Although our Sonbio brand is already well-known in Spain through the distribution of other products, we believe that its popularity can still increase substantially thanks to our organic pineapples, and not only in Spain, but also in the rest of Europe. The fact is that pineapples, unlike other fruits, are not usually labelled with a supermarket brand."

In this period, the production from Costa Rica is more abundant and prices are lower, so it is a good time to organise promotions. "We have to sell as much as we can now, before the summer arrives and large volumes of stone fruit, melons and watermelons hit the market, as the demand then will be more focused on these products," says the importer.

One of the strategies of this company, which is specialised in the marketing of organic products, is focusing on the sale of small-sized fruit. According to Sonia López, "organic pineapples are sold in individual pieces and they are significantly more expensive than conventional pineapples. For this reason, we are committed to selling smaller pineapples, provided that this makes them more affordable for the consumer. We have found that the smaller the organic fruit in general, the easier it is to sell it. We do the same with avocados."

At this time, Sonbio is also about to start its organic avocado campaign in Peru, as the fruit has already reached the right levels of fat. "There are hardly any Spanish avocados left and they are very expensive. We will start selling them this week."
