The crop will be expanded by 150 hectares

Honduras: Okra exports exceed 350,000 boxes

According to statistics from the Sustainable Rural Program for the Southern Region (Emprendesur), the country exports more than 350,000 boxes of Okra, which it grows on some 490 hectares.

Jose Maria Nieto, the program's market access coordinator, said that in the first quarter of 2018, producers of this legume had earned some 200 lempiras a day and up to 400 lempiras on weekends for the export of this product.

Producers have exported 350 thousand boxes worth 1.5 million dollars, added Jose Maria Nieto.

This export volume has debunked the idea that only big businessmen could export large quantities of vegetables.

According to Nieto, if small producers work together and apply good agricultural practices, they will be able to access the markets with the greatest potential.

Due to the demand for this product from the European and American markets, the country has decided to expand its cultivation in the southern zone of Honduras. The cultivation area would grow by 150 hectares, with the participation of two more companies and new markets.
