Mexico is the world's fifth largest broccoli producer

Broccoli is native to the coasts of the Eastern Mediterranean.

World production amounts to 24.2 million tons. China, the main producer, contributes 40% and Mexico, the fifth biggest producer, accounts for 2.1% of the world's production. Per capita consumption in Mexico is 1.1 kilos. The United States, which has a population of more than 300 million people, and an average per capita consumption of more than 5 kilos per year, is a market with high potential.

Mexico has 31,900 hectares devoted to broccoli production, which accounts for 3.3% of the country's vegetable production.

In 2016, the production volume was 507,482 tons. Guanajuato ranked first with 320,268 tons; followed by Michoacan, with 48,456 tons; Puebla, with 41,258 tons; Jalisco with 25,436 tons; and Sonora with 15,854 tons, among others.

Broccoli is one of the most important horticultural crops in Guanajuato because of the area devoted to this product, the income, and labor it generates.

Mexico exports 70% of its production. Its main destinations are the United States, followed by Canada, Japan, and some European countries.

Broccoli is Guanajuato's main agricultural export product. According to expectations, this product will continue growing through State programs that aim to contribute to the region's agricultural sustainability and improve the community's standard of living, which represents an opportunity for producers, marketers, and the agricultural industry.
