Arizona-based fresh produce company adds onions and avocados to its lineup

SunFed has recently added two new produce items to its lineup. “We are partnering with growers both in Mexico as well as Texas for our new onion program,” says Craig Slate, CEO of SunFed. The partnership allows us to offer white and yellow onions from February through June as well as red and sweet onions from March through June. “We feel this commodity is a perfect fit with our existing range of products including melons, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes and bell peppers.

Right now, the onions are grown in Central Mexico, but by mid-April production transitions to Texas where the season wraps up in June. “It has been a difficult growing season so far,” admitted Slate as Central Mexico has received a combination of rain and humidity. The onions will be available in the SunFed brand and although the current offering is conventional, SunFed plans to add organic production in the future.

Avocados
In addition to onions, SunFed has also expanded into the avocado category. “It is a growing category. We want to participate in that particular market and offer something different to the consumer,” Slate said. Avocados will be available under the SunFed label year-round.

SunFed will be present at the Viva Fresh Expo later this week. “We are looking forward to the event. Come and see us at booth #56.”
