Mexico: Tancitaro exports 90% of its avocados to the US
Rafael Vazquez Gonzalez, the treasurer of the local Vegetable Health Board, stated, during the presentation of the seventh Avocado Fair, that Tancitaro exported about 90% of its avocados to the United States.
Rafael Vazquez said the municipality had about 25 thousand hectares devoted to the production of avocado, and that they produced about 260 thousand tons per year.
23,500 of those hectares produce avocados for export. The main destination market is the United States, followed by the Asian market, as well as Latin America, and Canada.
Vazquez Gonzalez said that the production of the remaining 1,500 hectares was destined for national consumption, to supply states like Puebla, and State of Mexico, among others.
Nearly 4,500 producers are responsible for exporting the avocado to different parts of the world, and to a lesser extent, these producers are also consumers of this Michoacan product.
