The Haskap berry is one step closer to the EU market

It's been a long road for Haskap producers in Europe, wanting to start selling and promoting their fresh berries in the EU. Along with trying to develop a relatively unknown product, they were also presented with a road block, in the form of the Novel Food Act of 1997. The beginning of 2018 saw a new regulation (EU) 2015/2283 on novel foods, repealing and replacing the previous regulation. However, Janja Postružnik from Haskap Ltd said that they are still waiting for the Haskap (aka Honeyberries) to be approved.

In the meantime, Janja and business partner Zoran Petrovic, have continued to look for new ways to familiarise consumers with the very healthy Haskap berry and be able to make the product available year-round.

"Fresh Haskap berries are only available for one month, so we have been developing new products to make sure that people can buy this tasty and extremely healthy berry, no matter what time of year. Along with making juices, and frozen berries, we had a look on the market and decided to create new luxury products which are vegan, lactose free, organic and no added sugar. We have developed a handmade sweets line made with Haskap using only the best Ecuadorian Nacional pure cacao in the form of raw chocolate bars, raw Haskap cookies, raw organic snack and protein bars," shared Janja.

Haskap Ltd. continues to expand its growing area each year and Janja said that they continue to expand with new orchards.

"We believe that the options for Haskap berries are limitless. We continue to plant and test new varieties, looking for varieties which are sweeter and bigger. A recent study released about Haskap berries has said that Slovenian grown Haskap, due to different soil qualities, has even more health benefits than its Canadian super food cousin!"
