Switzerland:

Migros Basel gains in market share

Migros Basel has held up well in a still difficult market environment and closed 2017 with sales of CHF 921.5 million (€ 787.6 mln) and a profit of CHF 18 million (€ 15.4 mln). With an average inflation rate of 0.6 percent, core business revenue fell by 0.3 percent in real terms. With a minus rate of 0.3 percent, the supermarkets will register a slight decline in sales in 2017. Very pleasing, however, is the renewed gain in market shares in the supermarket sector. In addition, Migros Basel was able to serve more customers than in the previous year. Average sales per person have fallen slightly. The specialty stores (Melectronics, Micasa, SportXX, Obi, Do it + Garden) achieved sales at the same level as in the previous year, resulting in real sales growth of 3.3 percent with an average negative effect of 3.3 percent.

Successful fresh business
Migros Basel continues to focus on the fresh business. Among other things, the Migros Daily range, which stands for ultra-fresh and innovative convenience products, was successfully introduced in several branches and the range of 'Alnatura' and 'Bio' in the fruit and vegetable sector were expanded. The clientele responded particularly positively to the new offer of locally cut and portioned fruits. Migros Basel also responded to customer needs by creating the Service Center in the MParc Dreispitz, a point of contact for technical services of all kinds.
