Australian farmer plants longan and lychees for the Chinese market

An article on Australia Online reported that an Australian farmer from northern Queensland had introduced four lychee varieties from China. He hopes to plant longan and lychee, and export the fruit to the vigorously developing Chinese market. The farmer said that "only a few Australian farmers grow longan, but their retail value is between 12 and 15 Australian dollar [9.24-11.55 USD] per kg, so the profit margin is large."

The flourishing export to China, Korea, and Japan stimulates the fast development of the Australian fruit industry. The export of fresh fruit and nuts stands out in Australia's 60 billion Australian dollar [46 billion USD] agricultural industry. Experts estimate that the production value of fresh fruit and nuts in Australia already exceeds 4.9 billion Australian dollar [3.77 billion USD]. They hope that in the next five years the industry will grow with 27% to reach a value of 6.2 billion Australian dollar [4.77 billion USD].
