Joep van Koevorden, BioTropic:

"Demand for overseas organic top fruit from all over Europe"

Now that the European organic top fruit is as good as gone from the market, the demand for organic apples and pears from overseas is sky high. "This is true for for apples in particular, but the demand for organic pears is also good," says Joep van Koevorden of BioTropic.

"When there is still European supply on the market, as in previous years, there is sometimes barely any interest in overseas fruit. Despite the fact that the quality isn't perfect, the origin remains an important factor for the organic market. Now the top fruit has run out, and we can speak of a wide demand. The demand in the Netherlands, Germany and Scandinavia is high."

"We are now in the Argentinian organic season. We have been working with the Williams pears for a while now and the first Argentine apples arrived over a week ago. We continue the overseas season in mid May with apples from New Zealand," says Joep. According to the importer the product availability is certainly an issue. "The Argentinians export a lot to the US as well. The local market for organics isn't as big in Argentina itself, but people certainly have sufficient alternatives."
