China: Vegetable market supply and demand analysis for March 2018

Vegetable production conditions have improved lately as the weather has become warmer. The market supply consequently increased. At the same time, the Spring Festival effect has ended and consumption demand has decreased. Prices are therefore expected to return to normal levels after the seasonal high prices of the Spring Festival.

1. Vegetable prices maintained their seasonal increase. Some vegetables showed a relatively large price increase. Some of the major vegetable production areas in the south suffered from natural calamities and heavy rainfall. Vegetables took longer to mature under these conditions. Short term supply was tight and with the tail of seasonal Spring Festival demand the market was going strong.

2. Vegetable import volumes and import value showed an obvious increase in January in comparison with the same period in the previous year. Export volume and export value decreased.

3. It is estimated that the vegetable prices will come down after the seasonal increase during the Spring Festival. Central weather forecasts expect average temperatures in March to be higher than they were last year in March. As temperatures rise, vegetable production conditions tend to improve, and supply increases. At the same time the heightened Spring Festival demand has ended. Under these circumstances the vegetable prices are expected to come down after a seasonal high, unless a sudden "springtime cold spell" strikes.
