China: Potato seeds market might warm up in spring

Compared with the same period last year, this year's situation on the potato seeds market is completely different. In the previous spring, before the planting season, the price of seeds continuously increased, causing the seeds to be out of stock and in a short supply. In the spring of this year, the situation took a new turn, the market is weak and prices are falling. It doesn't seem that the price of potato seeds is going to increase - more likely it is going to remain the same or continue to decline.

Here is the reason for this fast change. Last year, too many farmers planted potatoes, which led to an oversupply and the fall in prices. This year, many of these farmers decided to reduce the area of potato planting. Small households have stopped buying seeds at all. Some sellers are artificially lowering the prices of seeds to cover losses. According to the analysis of this year's seeds prices, it is clear that by the beginning of this season, the potato planting areas will be significantly reduced. However, the decline in total output might heat up the potato prices and this could push up prices.
