“We have a good volume of Jackfruit coming in right now. We’re working with four to five loads per week,” says Vicky Cabello of Cabefruit Produce LLC in McAllen, Tex. “We’ve grown in volume in comparison to past year where we were working with two loads per week. The demand has grown and we’ve expanded our products to more clients. There are more people looking for Jackfruit every day.”
Cabello notes that the fruit is being consumed more and more by the Hispanic population buying it from retail outlets for example. “For Jackfruit, there are a whole bunch of new opportunities and new markets,” says Cabello.
New uses
Those new opportunities include a new product Cabefruit is introducing called Marvellous Jackfruit as Meat Substitute. It’s a versatile product for people seeking a healthier diet and looking for meat alternatives that have the same texture as meat but can be flavoured with condiments, says Cabello. The product is a finalist in the Most Innovative New Product—Fruit Category at the Viva Fresh Expo Innovative Showcase. “The benefits to use the product as a meat substitute are incredible,” notes Cabello. “We just need to make sure to send this message very clear to all our markets.”
Meanwhile competition for imported Jackfruit does come from various markets around the world, notes Cabello, since it is experiencing higher and higher visibility. Looking ahead, Cabello notes that in the coming weeks, she’s anticipating a growth in sales by one to two more loads per week.
