Paraguay: 15 weekly loads of bananas for Argentina

According to Sebastian Fariña, a producer from the district of Tembiaporã, banana production has increased notably in recent weeks, which allows producers to have good sales locally and to export to Argentina.

He also said the banana produced in Paraguay had a good demand in the neighboring country because it was healthy and had a good flavor.

When he was asked how much he was shipping to Argentina, he said they were currently exporting an average of 15 loads per week. Each load consists of 1,050 boxes of bananas.

The producers of banana from Tembiaporã export their product in trucks that cross the lake of the Acaray dam on a raft. Sometimes they transport the boxes of bananas in small boats. Their goal is to get to Route 7, from where they go to the marketing centers. The banana for export is taken to Asunción and then to Puerto Falcon, where it enters the neighboring country.

Production Increase
He also said that production could increase after Easter, as the current climate was very favorable for banana production. "The weather is good and people are working. The product was scarce, but now production is good. The quantity and quality of our production improves as time goes by," said Fariña.

He also said that local prices ranged from 60,000 to 70,000 guaranies "Prices might fall after Easter because production will increase. However, prices will continue to be reasonable," he said.

Sebastián Fariña highlighted the controls currently being carried out at the border posts to prevent the entry of banana contraband from Brazil.

This was one of the concerns of Paraguayan banana producers, who reiterated this issue to the national authorities on many occasions, as a massive amount of Brazilian bananas used to enter the country without any phytosanitary control through the various border points.
