Peru: Pomegranate's growth is slow, but expectations are high

The Beta Agroindustrial Complex continues to diversify its agricultural export basket and exploring new business opportunities. This year it has started to work with pomegranates, a crop that generates expectation.

Lionel Arce Orbegozo, the general manager of the company, said they currently had 70 hectares of pomegranates, of the Wonderful variety, in Ica.

"We purchased the pomegranate farm this year. The plants are already in full development and yield an average of 40 tons per hectare. We estimate that we will export 2,800 tons in the current campaign," he said.

He also said that they would send the fruit to Europe, mainly to the Netherlands.

Lionel Arce said they would get to know this crop, its operation, and qualities this year, and that they would then analyze if they should extend the area devoted to this crop.

"We could increase the area by 20 or 30 hectares, that's the initial idea. We know that the market is limited so we are checking out Peru's productivity and volumes," he said.

He also said that, even though the pomegranate's growth was slow, as it doesn't have a massive market like other crops (avocado, blueberries or asparagus), it generates expectations.

"Diversification is an inherent part of our company. We are looking to explore other business opportunities, not just the ones that are traditional for us," he concluded.
