Peru: Small producers market Wonderful pomegranate in the international market

A group of small producers of the El Carmen Santa Cruz-Palpa Farmers Association Ica is promoting the marketing of Wonderful pomegranates to international markets with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MINAGRI), through its Compensation Program for Competitiveness (AGROIDEAS).

The association is made up of 23 beneficiaries of the assistance provided by AGROIDEAS. In 2015, they produced 15 tons and this season they expect to obtain around 60 tons. It should be noted that the production process, from planting to the harvest of pomegranate, lasts an average of two years.

The producers of the association have managed to export their product to Russia and Singapore through the Grinland company. They sell their pomegranates at US $1.35 per kilo, and earned about S /. 48,000 in their first campaign in 2015. According to their projections, in 2018 they will earn around S /. 300 000.

In January of this year, the producers met with Israeli businessmen to define future trade agreements.

Favorable conditions
Santa Cruz, a district located in the province of Palpa in Ica, has a tropical climate that is conducive to the cultivation of pomegranate, as it accelerates the fruit's ripening process so it can be harvested up to one month earlier than expected.

AGROIDEAS implemented a business plan and invested S /.642,028.39 in technology to improve their processes. They gave the producers 39 hand-harvesting scissors, 39 hand-pruning scissors, 39 pruning saws, three atomizers, conduction structures, fertilizers, agrochemicals, and farmyard guano.

They also conducted 39 advisory services on good agricultural practices, delivered 19 seedlings for the installation of wonderful pomegranate, financed 14 months of technical assistance and 10 months of advice in nutrition and health, which has improved the quality of the quality production.

The MINAGRI will continue promoting the competitiveness of medium and small agricultural producers at the national level through the AGROIDEAS program, which provides financial incentives to support associativity, business management, and technology adoption.
