Italy: Amara liqueur made with blood oranges

"Amara is the only Italian liqueur produced by an azienda agricola that monitors all production phases from plant growth and processing to bottling. This is why renowned restaurants, gourmands and lovers of local specialities choose it," explains Giuseppe Librizzi (an engineer with a passion for marketing) and Edoardo Strano (an orange producer), co-founders of Rossa Sicily.

Young entrepreneurs Giuseppe Librizzi and Edoardo Strano founded Rossa Sicily, which covers 10 hectares and is part of Consorzio di Tutela dell'Arancia Rossa di Sicilia IGP.

"Our company is located at the foothills of Mount Etna, in Sicily. We are traditional producers but look at Amara with the eyes of a young business that focuses on marketing and communication. Thanks to our products, we like to consider ourselves global ambassadors for Sicily."

Over the past few years, Rossa Sicily's turnover increased by 50%. "We believe the key to this product's success is the fact that the essence of Sicilian blood oranges is found in every bottle. This premium product can be found in wine bars, gourmet stores and the best restaurants all over the world."

What are Amara and Etna Bitter?
In its 400 sq m facility, the company produces 70 thousand bottles of Amara. The best blood orange peel is combined with an aromatic herb and sugar infusion producing a natural liqueur with a strong flavour and a clear golden colour.

The product was developed by adapting an old family recipe and encloses all the flavour and extraordinary properties of blood oranges. The Sicilian artisanal food and agricultural world retaking control over one of its excellencies.

"We obtain two infusions in two separate silos: one with blood orange peel and the other with aromatic herbs. They are left to macerate for around 40 days and are then filtered and mixed in a third silo with sugar and water. It's the only liqueur obtained by a traceable citrus fruit certified by the Consorzio di Tutela Arancia Rossa Igp. It is available in 50 or 150 cl bottles with alcohol content of 30% vol."

Etna bitter is an innovative product between a vermouth and a bitter. It is obtained from a base of Sicilian white wine and almond, tangerine and blood orange peel infusion sweetened with orange blossom honey. Etna bitter is perfect for minimalist mixology based on ingredient quality rather than quantity.

"An Italian aperitif that promotes typical Sicilian productions. It is in fact an alternative to traditional aperitifs, suitable for demanding clients looking for quality and probably tired of the same old industrial aperitifs. This is perfectly in line with current trends and with the preference towards natural products such as honey, which taken from the hives in our groves at the foothills of the volcano."

"20% of our turnover comes from abroad, from countries like the US, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Austria, France, Belgium and Germany. This gives a newfound dignity to blood oranges, which are often penalised by market dynamics."

Future objectives
"We want to change how Sicily is represented and perceived. The region has a lot to offer but doesn't always have a good name. There are a lot of difficulties to face, especially when it comes to exports, as we have no support nor infrastructure. There is a lot to do to promote Sicily as a brand."
