Sales cooperatives and wholesalers in Germany have had white asparagus for more than a week now, but Swiss marketers had to wait a little longer on the white gold. Now wholesale companies Ernst Welti AG and EO Keller AG have marketed their first lots from Royal Spargel GmbH. Wholesaler Christian Keller: “At this time, the sizes with 20+ are still a bit short compared to the usual size of between 22+ and 26+, but otherwise the quality is great. Goods from France and Spain are already available, but Swiss consumers are waiting for the goods from Germany every year.”
Domestic produce from the asparagus stronghold Flaach will not be available for a few weeks, although the plants are also produced on heated fields there. According to the latest news, the first Swiss asparagus will not be harvested for another month. Only then does the season really start, Keller says. “Once there is asparagus from the region, the consumer will always go for these. Consumption has definitely risen here in recent years.”
