Queensland alert, not overly worried

Australia weather warning: Cyclone Linda coming in from Coral Sea

The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed a category 1 cyclone formed at about 4.15 pm local time in the Coral Sea, about 1100 km east of Mackay. It is moving southwest toward Queensland but is still unlikely to reach the coastline.

Winds of 65 km/h were measured at its core yesterday, with gusts of up to 95 km/h as the system moved south-southwest. Large waves and dangerous surf is expected to be whipped up by Linda as it edges towards the southeast coast on Wednesday morning.

Couriermail.com.au quoted the Bureau of Meteorology as saying: “Tropical Cyclone Linda is expected to continue to move southwest towards the Queensland coast for the next 24 hours, before turning south and ultimately southeast away from the coast again.”

“On Wednesday, conditions will become unfavourable for tropical cyclone Linda, and it is expected to transition into an intense subtropical low.”
