Prices soar

Buenos Aires Central Market sees decline in onion volumes

According to a bulletin published by Buenos Aires' Central market, the supply of onions in 2017 recorded a decrease over the previous season, as it went from 114.934 tons in 2016 to about 108,000 tons in 2017.

In the past year, the price of the domestic production increased while the price of imported onions decreased. Moreover, between April and August there were no imports of onion, so only the national production entered the Central Market of Buenos Aires.

There had been an upward trend since 2001 and up until this season. However, in the current campaign, the shipments from the provinces of Santiago del Estero and Brazil decreased by 37.7% and 73.4% respectively, which explains part of the total losses this season.

Meanwhile, the offer from the province of Jujuy experienced an increase of 76.8%. The provinces of Buenos Aires, Santiago del Estero, Mendoza, Rio Negro and Brazil produced more than 95% of all the onions sent to the Central Market in 2017. Buenos Aires led the supply with 55.1% of the total, followed by Mendoza and Río Negro with 12.4% each, and the province of Santiago del Estero, with 6.8%.

94.6% of all the onion is of the Valenciana commercial variety, 4.8% of the Valencianita variety, and 0.5% of the Colorada variety. The other varieties distributed are the Optima, Chata Blanca, Torrentina, and White varieties.
