Continued rise in price of Chao tian peppers after winter sets in

The flavor of sesame and peppers has always been popular with people from Chongqing. It is for that reason that fresh pepper has become a vegetable or seasoning that no table can go without. The price of peppers, and Chao tian peppers in particular, has shown an obvious increase in the Spring Festival season. The price of 0.5 kg of hot peppers even reached the same level as 0.5 kg of pork meat.

Fresh hot peppers are divided into spring crops and autumn crops. The spring crops enter the market in April and May. Their price is relatively high. When large volumes of hot peppers enter the market in August and September, the price is at its lowest. In winter the majority of peppers in distribution come from cold storage or greenhouses. The price is then at its highest. The reason why the price of hot pepper increased during Spring Festival season is that June of last year was extremely wet, which caused a decrease in production volume. There was an imbalance between demand and supply. The purchasing price of fresh hot pepper went from an average of 2 or 3 yuan [0.32 or 0.47 USD] to 4 yuan [0.63 USD]. Furthermore, if the rise in manpower costs are taken into account, then the rise in prices for hot peppers during Spring Festival season was inevitable.

The rise in price of Chao tian peppers is also connected to the cold wave in the south of China. The main production areas of peppers in the winter season are currently in the south. Farmers face high technological requirements to produce peppers in the winter season. This leads to an increase in production cost, which is one of the reasons for the rise in price during the Spring Festival season, together with the varied enthusiasm of purchasers and the unfavorable weather conditions. It is estimated that Chao tian peppers will maintain a high price until the spring crop enters the market in large volumes.
