China: Watermelon prices on the rise

There are several reasons behind this week's price rises. First of all, as the weather is getting warmer, both large supermarkets and small fruit stores are gradually stocking up on watermelon, which caused a short supply and price increases. Secondly, due to the declining local planting area, watermelons currently sold in the market are planted in Myanmar, whose supply season is from November of the previous year to March or April of next year. Thirdly, transportation costs increased as well. According to the local seller, the current freight rate is nearly RMB 10,000 yuan higher than usual.
