Youngest Moerdijk generation lays foundation stone for MSP Onions

Despite the cold, dozens of relations were present to witness the laying of the foundation stone of MSP Onion’s new onion processing factory in Nieuwdorp, the Netherlands last Friday. After all, it’s not just any project; the youngest generation drove as many as 1,600 miles. “We can speak of an incredibly sustainable, innovative and major project. We’ve worked towards this for years,” Lindert Moerdijk says about this milestone.

“Our international customers want high quality and 100% traceability at a low price. Due to the current method of working, the Dutch onion industry can’t fully meet these requirements. That was the boost we needed to take action. We’re expecting to reach a quality level not currently seen in the sector,” Lindert says.

He praised the mixture of capital, knowledge, experience, critical and out-of-the-box-thinking of Moerdijk members that have led to the start of this construction. “Because it should be clear that internal struggles won’t lead to such a project. Too many decisions have to be made for this. Of course we’ve had discussions, but we’ve now reached the time to build the factory of the future,” Lindert continues.

To realise this new construction, the company has expanded by five hectares. The municipality sold land to this end, and a greenbelt is disappearing. It will be replaced by a park, with water, playgrounds and footpaths at the back of the factory. To the front (the Hertenweg side), the situation will also be improved. The entrance is moved to the edge of the village.
