Long-awaited downpour strikes

North-west Queensland hit with heavy rain and flooding

This weekend, severe weather warnings were given for parts of north-west Queensland, with heavy rain and damaging winds hitting the region. There has been flooding, roads have been cut off and in several places cattle were stranded in high water.

Abc.net.au reported that although the high water levels caused massive inconvenience in the region, not everyone was down. Cane growers south of Giru, the township which saw record flood levels this week, said they were counting their blessings. "Since last year's Christmas, we haven't had any rain. January was dry and February was dry, so we were waiting for the rain," farmer Gary Stockham said. While some of his crop had been flattened by the storm, Stockham is confident it will bounce back once the sun comes out.
