Large supply of potatoes from Cyprus and France in Polish market
On the wholesale market in Bronisze, near Warsaw, there is a large supply of young potatoes from Cyprus and France, which are 1/3 cheaper than last year. Polish raspberry tomatoes have also hit the market, but their price is still much higher than for the imported ones.
In Bronisze, French potatoes are sold for 2.30 PLN* per kg, while Cypriot ones cost about PLN 0.20 more. For half of this price, you can buy potatoes imported from Belgium and the Netherlands from last year's production, said market leader Małgorzata Skoczewska.
Meanwhile, Polish potatoes cost between 0.40 and 0.55 PLN per kilo, or 20 percent cheaper than in February 2017.
At the same time, prices of domestic root vegetables remain stable, although with a tendency to gradually increase due to storage costs. Carrots are sold at a price of between 0.80 and 1.30 PLN per kilo, while onions, of which there is a poor volume in storage this season, are sold for between 0.50 and 1 zloty per kilo. This entails a 30% increase in price up until February 2017.
Polish raspberry tomatoes are now available; for the time being, however, they are still quite expensive (18-21 PLN per kilo) and cannot compete with the imported in terms of price. Domestic greenhouse tomatoes are expected to arrive soon, but for now, only imports from Turkey and Spain are available. Their wholesale price oscillates between 4 and 6 PLN/kg.
Also, domestic cucumbers cost between 7.5 and 9.5 PLN/kg. Imported ones from Ukraine are sold at a similar price, and Spanish ones are sold for 8 PLN per kilo. Given the growing supply of domestic cucumbers, a gradual fall in prices is expected.
