Logistics needs to be well organised in case of emergency

Logistics has been made rather difficult by the snow and ice over the past few days. However, many operators felt the decision taken by many prefectures to prohibit the circulation of heavy vehicles on motorways was rather illogical. While it is true that this didn't apply to vehicles transporting perishable goods, the fact is that it led to traffic jams on secondary roads.

Massimo Savini, CEO of Rete Logistica Agro-industriale (RLA), describes how they have been dealing with the emergency. "In situations such as this, we need to keep calm and employ all resources at our disposal. We monitor weather conditions in real time as well as the weather forecast. In addition, we use webcams to verify the condition of motorways and use Google Maps to calculate routes and see whether there are any traffic jams. We also advise drivers on alternative routes to reach their destination."

Savini does not agree with how the Prefectures dealt with the situation. "They decided not to allow lorries on motorways and, in doing so, actually affected traffic in the cities. But Società Autostrade charges tolls also to ensure road access in case of emergency. I believe it would have been enough to have them queue on the first lane with a police car at the front. They could have stopped them only while they waited for snowploughs or salt trucks. Motorways are the safest place for lorries in situations such as this."

RLA managed to deliver all goods until 27th February 2018. "We were lucky, and even managed to get organised using platforms less at risk."
