Argentina: Tomato production shows slight increase
Argentina's tomato production has experienced a slight increase in this last campaign. Despite this increase, the sector won't manage to achieve the sale figures reached in 2001. In fact, the downward trend continues year after year. In 2017, Buenos Aires' Central Market received 117.569 tons of tomato, practically the same amount as in the previous year, when the volume amounted to 117.745 tons and a half.
The Central Market received the most tomato in October, when it marketed a total of 12,050 tons. Even though the increase in volume is not very significant, the country may be facing a slow recovery of its tomato offer.
The tomato produced in Argentina comes from different production areas: Buenos Aires, Salta, Corrientes, Mendoza, Jujuy, Brazil, and other areas (Tucuman, Entre Rios, San Juan, Santa Fe, Cordoba, Rio Negro, La Rioja, Santiago del Estero, and Neuquen). The region of Buenos Aires led production with 36% of the total. It was followed by Salta, with 28%, and Corrientes with 18%.
Despite leading production, compared to the previous year, the tomato from Buenos Aires and Corrientes decreased by 5,092 and 3,920 tons respectively; while production from the provinces of Salta, Brazil, and Mendoza increased.
67.5% of the tomato varieties that entered the Central Market of Buenos Aires were of the round variety, 29.2% of the teardrop variety, and 3.2% of the Cherry variety.
